DISTRICT ATTORNEY MIKE RAMSEY TO SPEAK AT THE DEMOCRATIC ACTION CLUB OF CHICO'S MONTHLY MEETING.

Chico, CA - District Attorney, Mike Ramsey will be speaking at the Democratic Action Club of Chico on Wednesday, September 21st at 7pm in the City Council Chambers. The general public is welcomed and encouraged to attend this event.

"Having an elected official as pivotal as District Attorney Mike Ramsey discussing current issues in Butte County is not only a testament to the Democratic Party's dedication to educating the public in a non-partisan approach, but further illustrates DACC's commitment to the greater Chico area."

The Democratic Action Club of Chico was chartered in 1997 to raise the visibility and activity of progressives in Northern California, to create unity and purpose among the existing Democratic clubs and committees in the often neglected rural counties, and is dedicated to the idea that "Good people with good ideas can make a difference."

The group is dedicated to extensive outreach to other counties as well as to the diverse population within the North State. DACC presents monthly programs that address local concerns with relevant and influential guest speakers and hold monthly meetings from 7:00pm -- 9:00pm on the third Wednesday of each month. The public is invited to each event.

Letter responding to Marco Chinchay's Letter RE: Voting Machines

March 23, 2005

Letters to the Editor

Chico Enterprise-Record

P.O. Box 9

Marlo Chinchay's letters are usually diatribe, but his most recent one attacking former candidate Roberts Braden was particularly disgusting; this time bringing his students into the foray. Marlo effectively put down his students - a particularly egregious offense for an educator.

Now to address what Marlo was denying (and yes Marlo - your 12 year olds could easily do a "Google" on these facts - but let's leave the kids out of this one). In his letter, Marlo denies "the companies that manufacture software to tally vote counts have ties to the GOP." Your "asinine" letter would have made more sense if you simply stated that it is a non issue (which is debatable). But for a teacher to claim that there are no ties with the overwhelming evidence to the contrary is at best irresponsible.

As has been typical of conservative letters of late, not only have these letters been wholly untrue but vehemently deny the obvious to obfuscate the real discussion - an argument that is worthy of discussion! But if our educators cannot even acknowledge the issues, we are in worse trouble than we thought. Marlo, here's the information you failed to Google: Walden O'Dell, Chief of Diebold is "committed to helping Ohio deliver its electoral votes to the president next year." Ohio Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell after approving Diebold voting machines broke the law requesting corporate donations for Bush's re-election campaign.

Sincerely,
Randall Stone

Letter from CA Democratic Party Chair, Art Torres

Dear Randall:

Congratulations to the nurses who braved the snow and sleet to demonstrate against Arnold's anti-nurse position.

We had a great meeting with Democratic delegates to our State Convention in San Francisco this past Saturday morning and afternoon. Kudos to Vicki Cosgrove, Lucy Sells, DNC Members Garry Shay and Rachel Binah, Rick Jacobs, Gerald and Kathleen Hill, Donna Patterson, Tom Brown, Kathy Klein, Marie McDonald, Mark Cesare, Barbara Graves and the over 200 people who attended a full Saturday and care about the future of our Party, and it is just that, the future of OUR Party. Each of us has a responsibility to provide input and the leadership has a responsibility to listen and take action! And it starts with me!!

Among the many issues we discussed were election reform and voters' rights, protecting the uniformity and integrity of the voter registration process, provisional balloting process, counting of votes, and requiring a voter verified paper trail. We also discussed sending blue California state ambassadors to red California counties for a long-term commitment for education and GOTV in the red areas of our state.

Remember, the red areas may not be able to elect a Democratic Congress Member, Senator or Assembly Member just yet, but they can forge a victory for statewide Democratic candidates! We also talked about a media strategy, which we are forming, maybe not as fast as some would prefer, but we are working on it. We are working on a daily basis to improve our web site.

Issues were also raised about grassroots organizing and a potential steering committee to coordinate grassroots activists. Some of this work is done with the clubs and the California Democratic Council (CDC), but there is still much to do. We are formulating flyers on our web site so that activists can hand them out to rebut the Arnold signature gatherers. Our thanks to California for Democracy volunteers who will help to educate folks being solicited to sign Arnold's initiatives.

Folks also raised the issue of giving more money to Democratic candidates in red areas to help with their ballot pamphlet arguments. In addition, we talked about action agendas in specific areas where campaign offices are needed. In short, I answered questions for about 45 minutes and it was great. The input was sincere, the concerns well founded and the responses forthcoming!

Well, Arnold is at it again. Fund raising throughout the country, attending premieres in New York, attending to the monkey business of his business and special interest cronies instead of being in Sacramento tending to the people's business.

The special election Arnold was to have this year could well cost more than $70 million of taxpayer money, almost as much as the recall cost us to elect him, which totaled more than $66 million.

Our Director of Research Chris Meyers came up with some very important information that I want to pass on to you: What could $70 million buy?

1,691,275,168 #2 pencils
121,915,820 Magic Rub erasers
98,130,841 wire bound notebooks
2,333,333 brand new textbooks for the 21st century!
135,658 brand new Dell Computers ($516 each, Dell 2400 with monitor; no, we do not receive donations from Dell!)

$70 million can create new jobs in California, not in India as the Governor's Citizens to Save California have just done.

Here are the new jobs we could fund with $70 million instead of a special Arnold ego-election:

1,949 New School Teachers (based on starting salary of $35,919)
1,496 New Registered Nurses (based on starting salary of $46,800)
2,484 New Firefighters (based on starting salary of $28,184)
1,424 New Police Officers (based on starting salary of $49,152)

Stay in touch. We Democrats have a plan! We are waiting for Arnold to get back to Sacramento, roll up his sleeves and actually start working! We cannot afford to wait much longer and, facing looming cuts to vital programs, we cannot afford to spend $70 million on an election that only benefits Arnie's campaign donors and special interest buddies!

Sincerely,
Senator Art Torres (Ret.)
Chairman, California Democratic Party
